Butoh Workshop - Japanese Contemporary Dance

Tenko Ima

Born in 1958. Director of Butoh Company Kiraza and Ima Tenko Butoh Studio. In 1980, she was a founding member of Byakkosha. With their separation in 1994, she became an independent dancer. In 2000, she created the company Butoh Kiraza. She has given many Butoh performances in historic theaters, temples and shrines in Kyoto. In 2020, she received the National Arts Festival Award of Excellence. Since the opening of KYOTO Butoh-kan in 2016, she has been doing solo work for a long time. She broke new ground through her exploration of avant-garde butoh, supported by the "power of Tamafuri (the revitalization of life)" found at the origins of Japanese arts.

In 2018, he participated in a performance and debate at the event "3rd GINGA NZINGA III - 2018" held by the Nzinga group in Kyoto.

She received the Agency for Cultural Affairs' 2020 Art Festival Excellence Award for her performance of "Kongoseki -Diamond-". Through the exploration of avant-garde butoh supported by the "power of tamafuri (life revitalization)" seen in the origins of Japanese performing arts, he pioneered a unique frontier.
